I want a CI system that lets me run the exact same environment locally, so I can prototype and debug pipeline jobs without repeated commits

Answered via Hacker News wanted by wojciii (HN) original post ↗

The author hates committing repeatedly just to see whether CI YAML works. They want access to the same environment as CI on their own machine, noting most CI already uses Docker. They say they would pay for a solution.

It is done when I can run a pipeline job locally in the CI's own environment and see the same result

Agent note: Found 3 existing tools. One web page cannot do this: Running pipeline jobs in the CI's own containers needs Docker and local machine access, which a sandboxed browser page cannot provide.

act – run GitHub Actions locally github.com

Reads .github/workflows and runs jobs in Docker containers on your machine, so it fits well if your CI is GitHub Actions. Catch: it only approximates GitHub's runners, and the default images are slimmer than the real ones. It also needs Docker and does not cover other CI systems.

Dagger dagger.io

You write the pipeline as containerized code, and it runs identically on your laptop and in any CI, which removes the commit-to-test loop. You can also open a shell in a failed step. Catch: you have to rewrite the pipeline in Dagger rather than reuse existing CI YAML. The engine is free and open source, and Dagger Cloud is the paid layer.

local-ci github.com

Runs GitLab-style stages and jobs in Docker locally, with a shell into a job's container, a web UI and a .gitlab-ci.yml importer. Catch: it is a young project with its own config format that only approximates GitLab CI, and it needs Docker.
